I take a neutral stance regarding gulf war syndrome, but I will say the deformities in Jenny Moore’s daughter are more than likely not connected to DU courtesy of being a shell loader. You are only exposed to DU once the round has been fired, and hit a target. Until then the DU is fully contained within a heavy and multi-layered metal casing. To actually have any exposure you would either have to be in or very close to a structure hit with DU, removing/cleaning out a hit structure, or continually and actively handling and living amongst the remains of spent ordnance. An artillery battery is set up miles away from the actual point of battle. These units can be highly mobile as needed, but even an incompetent utilization of leap frogging maneuvers would mean little increase in proximity to an engagement.

I could potentially concede the point if she was at least a member of a tank crew, or some highly mobile unit close to the front. Even then a tank crew is in a highly enclosed space, and engagements usually occur at an average of a mile or two away so no matter how many enemy tanks you blow up using DU rounds you don’t get close enough to any potential vaporized DU from shells. Even if you pass right by the burnt out tank it is a far cry from rummaging around in it. The British and American NATO personnel did little to no actual cleanup or handling of Iraqi tanks, and so had an incredibly insignificant amount of actual exposure.

You are also inappropriately foisting responsibility onto NATO DU as being the sole cause of these health issues. Saddam Hussein was not exactly worried about his Greenpeace standing due to his penchant for: setting oil wells on fire, experimenting with offensive use of NBC weapons, regularly used NBC devices against Iraqis and enemies, allowed lax storage methods, rapidly dismantled his NBC program which allowed for more improper storage/destruction methods, etc. Why are people only looking at DU despite the speedy deterioration of Saddam’s NBC arsenal occurring simultaneously? The NATO use of DU was comparatively small when you factor in the amount of stored chemical weaponry that was often poorly buried throughout the country in rusting metal oildrums. His government had to have been aware of any DU-linked health problems occurring in his country, and still no effort was made to clean any of it up. Why is it the responsibility of NATO and/or OPEC member nations to clean up munitions waste in another country that were employed thanks to the territorial ambitions of said country? I am also curious about the Kuwati fetal deformity and cancer rates. We had a fair amount of tank battles there, and yet you seem to only hear about Iraqi statistics.

DU was not and is not used in bombs. DU was used as anti-tank bullets and as heavy armor. Thousands of the bullets were fired in the Gulf War, most of them by the A-10 tank killing aircraft. A number of those missed the target because that is what happens when you strafe a target with a cannon mounted on a fighter airplane. Those are all included in the various counts, but most of them are probably intact just like the one shown on Pg 32 of the UNEP report of the scientific field team in Bosnia-Herzegovina. DU is also not a cause of Gulf War Syndrome (now-called Gulf War Illness) and it highly likely that no-one has ever been sickened from contamination by DU. That is because it is highly unlikely that anyone has gotten contaminated with DU. The US Department of Veterans Affairs has thus far tested about 2000 veterans and found three soldiers who had DU contamination. All three of those soldiers are still carrying pieces of DU shrapnel from friendly fire attacks on Bradley Fighting Vehicles during the Gulf War. All three of them had been in a long term monitoring program for years.
