Nazi Concentration Camps

While there is lots of terrible things going on in Sri Lanka saying this is the same type of thing is cheapening the meaning of this. Please feel free to demonstrate how similar this is. There does not seem to be a concerted effort to wipe out all Tamils, no laws removing all civil rights of people simply as they are Tamil, no large scale deportation to death camps. Lots of problems, lots of stupid decisions, lots of killing, but nothing at all like this.

I cannot possibly fathom the pain and suffering these people experienced. My heart aches with sorrow..

One of the founding percepts of the Nazi State, was the insane belief in the superiority of one group of people, above all others.

Antisemitism has a long and deeply established history throughout Europe. The Nazi hatred of Jews was neither unique, nor unprecedented.

What was unique about the Nazis, was theirs was the first modern state, so utterly devoid of common human decency that, given the means, they set about creating the mechanism for mass murder on an industrial scale. That many other despised peoples were swept up into that killing machine, is a given. But it must be remembered that the machine itself, was planned and built, for the extermination of the Jews.

Concentrating despised minorities is also neither new, nor unique to the Nazis. The Americans inflicted such on the Indian populations with the Reservation system throughout the 19th century, and it still exists, to some extent, today. The British invented the modern concept of the Concentration Camp, during the Boar War.

Whether from the medieval European Jewish Ghetto, to the Negro ghettos of the United States, to Palestinian refugee camps, to the high-rise ghettos that France reserves for her Muslim immigrants, or to ‘China Towns’ all over the world, States have, either by design or fiat, sought to better control despised minorities by isolating them from the general populace.

Such is the case today, with the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. The Tamils have lost a particularly nasty war with the Sri Lankan government. Tamils have been rounded up, and forced from their homes, at gunpoint, into concentration camps. That much is fact. That conditions in those camps are deplorable, and people are dying as a result, is also a fact. That the Sri Lankan government is not bothered by this, seems clear.

I believe one can, without in any way diminishing the horror of the Nazi death camps, compare the two.

In both cases, a despised minority was forced, under threat of death, behind barbed wire. That the Sri Lankan government is allowing a captive people to die from hunger or disease, but refrains from out-right murder, demonstrates only a difference in degree.

Is this an out-and-out genocide? No. Not yet. But is it a viscous example of inhumanity?

Think about this – Am I better person, because I only killed one of your children, and not the rest?

What is happening to the Tamils is a tragedy, but moreover, it is a crime. And as with the case of the Jews, the world has chosen to do nothing.

Where is the UN sanctioned embargo of trade goods, that might so effectively force the Sri Lankan government to change their ways?

The answer is as simple, as it is shameful.

The Tamils are a small people, without wealth or friends.

During their war, the Tamils confined their terrorism to Sri Lanka. While condemning all terrorism, we need to ask: If they’d hijacked airliners, or leveled an office tower in a western city, would we hear them now?

As it is, no one cares.

And that, in the end, says something very sad about us.
