The Real Superhumans: Quest for the Future Fantastic

The Real Superhumans: Quest for the Future FantasticThe Real Superhumans and the Quest for the Future Fantastic is a special from the Discovery Channel.

It follows four people with what are described as real life superhuman abilities, a geneticist who created the first chimera of two very different species of rodents, and a scientist on a mission to become immortal.

The show was done in a comic book format ending with the common slogan To be continued as to indicate that the people of the show and humanity itself is just beginning to venture into a new age, one where genetic manipulation and other technologies to obtain special abilities will be for sale to the general public.

The program postulates that the sole reason for the abilities of these people is their genetic makeup. However, many scientists now dispute this orthodoxy, as there are sufficient scientific grounds to think that genetics has limited scope in explaining all human characteristics, and epigenetic processes play a much larger role than previously realized.

Firstly, our beliefs, intentions and physiological state has been shown to significantly alter gene expression in animals via epigenetic processes. Stress is a physiologic and chemical response to environmental or perceived stimuli.

It is very well known that stress and other physiologic responses can affect expression of genes in differing situations. It has also been found that in a person, state of mind and stress can affect epigenetic encoding and that changes can actually be inherited.

This is just a preview. The full documentary is not available at this moment.

    Amazing Documentary. Thanks.

i thought this was a big load of fluff.... genetic modification to become smarter and to hear in color? aint happening in 50 years. scientists can barely deal with making better washing machines and bombs and other lucrative markets.

and the title? superhuman my behind! I want to see "I am legend"style mutations.... than I will be convinced...

  • Gary V

    Another very interesting doc. ?

  • tariqxl

At first I had a few strong opinions about this then i thought what will be will be, i don't care I'll probably perish during the eugenics war that gene roddenbury penned.

  • Squeezle42

Interestingly enough that does help :p Maybe I have crazy memory too :p

    Edit: I miss Heroes

  • stevenbhow

I was surprised that they didn't mention the Buddhist monks in the Himalayas that do the same thing as the Ice Man through mediation techniques. I think the Special Forces trains their soldiers to raise their core body temp as well.

    ????

Uhmm. So you are telling us you are ageless and immortal? Awesome.

    M.D. huh?

Well since you have it all figured out, simply wait a few hundred years, hold on to your birth certificate for the Guiness World Record guys and THEN we'll take the reintergration of LifeForce stuff seriously. I dont mean to be mean, it's just that everyone who thinks they have the answer to mortality dies just like everyone else. That includes you.

  • Elderkin

I don;t know where you got your M.D from but this is simply not true. If you are exposed to the destructive radiation of the sun you will die unless your DNA is somehow altered genetically. Do you think trees die from bad memories? Where exactly does this "life history program exist". Do you have any scientific data to support this?

Interesting program on the different abilities that some humans have.

Knowing that the visual center of the brain is already preprogrammed with spacial concepts was very interesting. It makes one wonder what took so long for perspective to be used if this is the case. I was truly amazed at the blind painter and his ability. It changed how I thought of painting and the ability for someone to paint.

The woman who has her three senses combined taste, color, hearing and sight was also very intriguing. It must be a very interesting world to associate color with hearing and taste. Very neat. I wonder if this capability can be passed onto her children?

The man whose ability to withstand cold will be very beneficial when the Earth's climate begins to cool in the years ahead. This genetic modification is what will allow modern humans to survive the next ice age. And from my research one is due at any time based on past climatic history.

I was intrigued by the man who wants to live forever. Larry Ellison the CEO of Oracle also wants to live forever. The easiest and most practical way to live forever is to have have children. In this way your genetics / genome is preserved and moves forward through time.

It is a good thing that people cannot live forever as there needs to be constant renewal in the human population. Humans like all animals have a finite life span and I firmly believe this is the way it should be. Older people eventually have to die off to make room for the younger people and families.

Otherwise over population on the Earth would become a serious problem.

And it is really not how long you live, but rather what you accomplish with your life that counts. And if one wants to get really deep on the matter depending on your religion, one's soul is constantly recycled in the bigger scheme of things. You live a life, make your contribution and learn from a series of experiences. You die, your soul is freed up, and is eventually reborn in a new body. And the cycle continues indefinitely. However for your spirit to grow and mature one must face death to be renewed.

The genetic scientist was very interesting in that he was very keen to create new life forms by combining genetic material from various sources. Is it wise for this scientist to this type of work? Many would question it. However nature / universe has been experimenting with different life forms since the beginning of time and since we are a product of nature / universe it is only natural that we have evolved some humans to do this work.

I mean just look at the different types of humans we have seen in this program. Nature is always tinkering with the human genome trying to find new versions that are better to survive in their environment.

There is one fundamental law for the universe. This law is to take the most basic components such as pure energy and hydrogen atoms and turn them slowly into more complex things such as suns, atoms that fill the periodic table, planets, solar systems, universes, molecules to make life possible, and then eventually life itself.

The fundamental law of the universe is go from a disorganized state of pure energy to a complex state of organized life trying to understand itself.

How do I know this? Because humans exist. And humans exist with a built in desire to understand themselves, how the universe works, and everything around them. We are nature. We are the universe in a sentient form. And we are nature trying to improve ourselves just like natural selection.

I forgot to mention the man who is an amazing human calculator. What an amazing feat of neural bio-engineering. And to think that he was unable to do math at an earlier age. Simply amazing!

Each of these unique humans is really a special gift to all of humanity and it is really wonderful that we live in a world today where by we can enjoy these individuals and their gifts through documentaries like this.

By being aware of humans with extra special talents and gifts, people in general will be less afraid and more tolerant of people who are different. Whose brains are wired in such a way as to make truly a genetic gift to humanity.

Special thanks to the BBC and the documentary film crew who took the time and effort to put this very interesting documentary together.

So what is my special gift to humanity?

I have unique ability to see future events. My brain neurons seem to be able to be triggered by neural activity in a future reality. There has been a lot of talk that we live in a multi-universe.

I firmly believe that this is true. From the age of 10 years that I am aware of I have been able to foretell future events that effect me personally. It is a very unusual gift and one that I am testing all the time for accuracy now.

And for those that are curious no it does not work on lotteries.

What my brain receives on a periodic basis is memories of future events that I will live through. When I live through this future event it allows me judge the accuracy of the premonition.

It is pretty cool when you realize that you have had a premonition. It is not always clear that you have had a premonition.

Just last night when I was working, I suddenly remembered I had to move my laundry out of the washer into the dryer. It came completely out of the blue. Four minutes later my roommate walked in and told me that he had moved my clothes to the dryer. This happens to me all the time in one form or another. This is a small premonition, but there are much bigger ones.

How it works I have no idea. But it does. I cannot change or alter the future. The premonition is just an experienced memory transferred into the past.

So everyone has their own special gift it seems.

One of Jung's favourite quotes on synchronicity was from Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, in which the White Queen says to Alice: "It's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards".

The more one becomes aware that life is a highway on which one travels, the more one will be able to read the map ahead of time.
Often times i walk out of my house and purposely makes myself very aware of the flow of life towards me as much as me towards it.
I physically envision that. I look for signs and they come from very unexpected situations and things.
As long as i don't attach wanting to it but remain in a state of receiving, it works.

My super human brain told me half way through this doc that I've seen it before. Mildly interesting.

"Otherwise over population on the Earth would become a serious problem."

Before we gain the ability of immortality we will have solved lot of other problems and made more progress in genetics, cybernetics, nanotechnology etc.

By this time human and Machine would have merged and have combined ability. When this happens you are not going to be limited by the resources you find in your sole planet, you will rather have access to the resources available in your star systems, galaxy and beyond. You will colonize your moon, then your neighboring planets and move beyond that.

You will not find a most advanced civilization in a planet like earth when we fuse ourselves with machines; we will no longer have to breath in oxygen, drink water and eat food. We will be able to get our energy directly from our stars.

So when you think of living for ever you have to think in the perspective of living in a world which much more advances than current and near future. Before humans live forever lot of other problem will have already solved because reaching that requires them to be solved first.

So now do you still have problem if people started living forever?

i was thinking exactly the same thing. they have been doing it for hundreds of years. what's the saying?.. "mind over matter."

  • mind_trapped

i loved the blind man's capability. Outstanding! i am glad he was able to draw the outline of the basilica but if he messed up, i would of still been amazed that he can paint what he hasnt seen with such accuracy. by far, my favorite super human :)

Does anyone here get concerned about the abuse of this technology? Is it not a worry that the development of these skills for all man kind (not for just the army) could be then used against the creators?

Still I am sceptical... I believe that the ability to conduct these super human skills are borne of the same human ability that has brought us evolution. The interface between existance and survival. I am not sure if you could 'bottle' these attributes. Lets see if there is a super human army in our life times.

I bugs me that these superhuman abilities are assumed to all be genetic in nature. Ice man, for example, most people are capable of with standing those temperatures and if you are running your feet stay very warm along with your body. Of course you must train to be able to do this, Ice Man is a supreme athlete-- but, I seriously doubt his gift is genetic. Some of the other gifts are more likely genetic, a savant like ability with numbers often comes at the cost of other mental impairments in areas of creativity and sociability. I'm mystified by the blind man, I've never seen that before-- though I will say I have worked with blind children who are able to fool you in to thinking they can see-- we overestimate the importance of our eyes.

But really, I enjoyed the questions this raised, but I think the manner of presentation is very reductionist. If you want to *be* an "ice man" then delicate yourself to training. I run in shorts and short sleeves all through the NYC winter in very minimal shoes. I'm just a normal woman and I could not do this 5 years ago.

We all have superhuman potential inside.

So over hyped and somewhat misinformed. Another Discovery triumph.

  • nxbgan

Awesome ability. I believe I have the same thing. A set of memories or thoughts come across as a day dream and then it actually happens. It's not like you/I tried to predict it, it just came through an open door(instead of us knocking first and it opened up for us). Seems truly amazing and psychic. Soo...now that you have it and I have it, I'm going to give up thinking it's anything special haha, oh well. maybe just an accident.

not totally understanding why "Mr.Immortality" was in this. He was kind of just an annoying, narcissistic person with the desire to live longer. You know..that desire almost everyone has. Sure he spoke well but I don't understand his significance. He feared death and led a healthier lifestyle to avoid it..big deal. I would sooner prefer to see one of the doctors or specialist in the documentary featured as one of the fantastic four oppose to him.

it all sounds like a new eugenics to me. What scares me is people like the Rockefeller's, The Bushes, Clintons, and Rothchilde's living forever.

    1. Synesthaesia generally runs in families, so it is genetic.
    2. The sensory pairings tend to enhance nuanced details and makes everything more memorable.

There's no mystery in this, muscles are 20% energy efficient, producing the by product of heat as the remaining 80% energy expended.

Mind over matter isn't actually a real thing.

That guy is special in that he can control his temperature better than anyone else in the world. He's set several Guinness records dealing with traveling in cold conditions or swimming in them.
