Second Opinion: Laetrile at Sloan-Kettering

Most people would likely agree that corruption exists in multiple areas of our lives, and the documentary film Second Opinion shows how the medical field and government agencies that are supposed proponents of the health of American citizens are not immune to such corruption. The films' mission is to once again uncover a cover up of a natural "drug" that has not only been proven effective in slowing the growth of cancerous tumors, but is also cheap and virtually unpatentable; the latter being the implied and suggested reasoning behind the cover up.

Laetrile is a substance that remains illegal in the United States today although it is currently being clinically tested internationally in countries including Germany, repeatedly tested positive over the years in tests with lab rats as an affective method of slowing and even temporarily stopping the growth of cancerous tumors. Laetrile is derived from the pit of apricots, and while outlawed it is not harmful.

In the late 70's, cancer patients were running to Tijuana in large numbers to obtain laetrile injections, nearly1/10th in fact, but then something changed. In Second Opinion Ralph Moss Ph.D, who was hired as the Science Writer in Public Affairs for Sloan Kettering (a prestigious American cancer research institute where laetrile studies were originally conducted) gives us an in depth look at how the opinion of the public was swayed in opposition to the treatment that tested overwhelmingly positive until the testing was taken over and results purposely tainted by the powers that be. Those powers include major names in cancer fighting and government agencies, like: the FDA, the NIH, the American Cancer Society, and the National Cancer Institute.

This film shows us the enduring fight of a man who was brave enough to stand up for his convictions and what he knew to be the truth, risking it all to inform the public of a sham perpetrated by organizations that remain open today largely due to the support of the public that they've lied to. It is worth watching past the credits for an appeal from the films' director, as well as additional footage that exposes additional players in the cover up and more checkable facts that were leaked by Moss when he was employed at Sloan Kettering in the arena of Public Affairs writing.

The revelations, all stemming from true and documented information, will hit you like a ton of bricks as a viewer, and hopefully inspire change in the way we think about the treatment of a disease that continues to affect many people throughout the world today, and how we interpret and accept information provided to us by anyone.

The American Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK both have pages on Laetrile and both say the positive research results are anecdotal. I would encourage anyone that might want to try that substance to cure their cancer to research for sources of information that don't support it as a treatment or are trying to sell you that treatment.

It's important to see opinions from both sides before jumping headlong in an alternative treatment for cancer. Miracle drugs are few in medical science journals but numerous on the internet.

  2. LostHearts

I agree with you but I've also known people who probably died from the toxic chemo rather than their cancer. It is hard to believe that we can put a probe on objects in the solar system but still are stuck in the cut, poison and burn mode when it comes to cancer. Curcumin seems to have an excellent track record and is something to keep an eye on.

I have also come to distrust the "medical establishment". They are not the gods a lot of people believe they are. Also I may be wrong but I believe the ACS is beginning to change its mind on women and mammograms. Let's hope that there will be a breakthrough soon.

  3. Fabien L'Amour

I agree that Curcumin seems interesting. It's a proven powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.. The research is in early phase and delivery is very limited via digestion so I doubt buying supplements is useful to do anything to most cancers. It might end up being useful to treat cancer once targeted delivery is made possible but more research is definitely needed.

  4. LostHearts

I took it for a while but I have a very sensitive digestive system and it eventually caused me a lot of pain and I had to stop. Didn't bother my husband, though. Having had surgery for cancer already, I think I would do anything to avoid more cutting. Don't forget that marijuana also is supposed to have cancer fighting properties. It is so important to research anything that shows promise to get away from the horrors of regular treatment that we have today.

  5. Fabien L'Amour

The National Cancer Insitute published changes on December 17th 2014 to their PDQ Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies summary page on Cannabis and Cannabinoids. It looks like progress is being made in the research on Cannabinoids as possible cancer treatments and CDBs seem to be the most promising molecules.

It will be interesting to follow clinical trials in the coming years since Cannabis is now legalized in several states so cannabinoids will be easier to obtain and use in trials.

Why would you quote a society that profits billions from not finding a cheap alternative? That is the core of the problem. You think that these monstrous companies that make billions off of cancer are going to say... "Yep, we found alternative that costs 5 dollars vs 70,000 and has very similar results". As long as there is greed in this world this will never happen.

  7. a_no_n

But you're doing exactly the same thing!

You know that this "Cure" isn't given away free right? People pay tens of thousands of pounds and dollars for treatment. Snakeoil salesmen are salesmen above all else!

the only difference between your opinion and Fabiens is that Fabien has hard data supporting his, wheras you have only paranoid conspiracy theories and the anecdotes of obvious con men and their victims.

what about all the people who didn't survive, wthey can't give you their anecdote because they're dead.

Do you know how many people have died trying to take this treatment...no...me niether, you know why? because the con artists who try and pass it off as a cure don't keep records of all the people their scam kills. they only keep hold of data which might give weight to their product, they cover up everything else.

  8. a_no_n

it was causing you pain because it's related to cyanide. if you were taking it orally then you were basicly swallowing watered down cyanide capsules.

  9. Janeen Clark

corruption isn't a byproduct of "bad" or "evil" people. it is built into the structure of profit in the money system, and it is built into the mentality that we have been taught which is our friends and family are worth something but screw everyone else.

  10. Janeen Clark

if you look at any area where money is made through profit , there are lies , scams, betrayals, and belittling of human beings by the thought process that carries out the action of profit. this is the very rules of the game of money and power. if we don't go extinct anytime soon we will continue to see these behaviors as evident as the last 3k years of history have shown us. the evidence is overwhelming.

  11. LostHearts

How else can I take it?

  12. LostHearts

I gave your posts thumbs up. The mentality is one of "stab in the back" and "We don't care if people die as long as we make money". Not just the medical field. The top execs at the major automakers showed their cold-heartedness when they testified in court re: their killer cars.

  13. LostHearts

One of my earlier jobs had been working at an appliance store. We had just heard that one of the salesman had dropped dead of a sudden heart attack that morning before he came to work. The owner's first words were "He hadn't turned in his sales sheets yet, did he". We were all shocked at his callousness. He got a bite out of every sale and that was all he cared about. I'll never forget it.

  14. LostHearts

Let me play Devil's Advocate for a minute. We have made strides in cancer research (and other devastating diseases as well). We have advanced from not knowing almost anything about it to realizing it is a matter of mutations within the DNA. Research now is learning how every individual's DNA differs from others and thus are trying to gear treatment in an individualized manner. I personally believe that technology may provide the answer through nanobots or something similar that will patrol the body and destroy errant cells.

However, at the end IF a miracle natural cure or treatment is found, I do believe that the corporations who are making billions from the drugs and/or radiation treatments are not going to like it one bit. I don't think they will stand for it.

My cousin is a researcher trying to find causes and treatments for rare childhood diseases. She has dedicated her life to this. I admire her greatly. My point is there are various views on this subject. Everyone needs to work together but the profit motive will remain paramount to the greed system that has taken over both our country and the politicians who are supposed to look out for the common good. Sorry for the rant.

  15. a_no_n

i'm sure there's a quack out there for any and every way.

  16. LostHearts

I asked for your advice in good faith and you answer me in a less than polite manner. Others here do believe that Curcumin does show promise. It is a food spice that has been used for centuries. My digestive tract is sensitive to it. I thought perhaps you knew another way to get it into my system but instead all I get is a snotty answer. Thanks a lot.

  17. Kansas Devil

Just because something only has anecdotal evidence to support it doesn't stop the pharmaceutical corporations from selling the stuff.
If there is a profit to be made from chemistry even if the mechanism is not understood, it will be promoted.
Cancer is a $billion industry. Corruption is inevitable.

  18. a_no_n

no you got an honest answer...i don't think you should be using it at all because it's obviously bullsh/t.

to be honest if it's at the point where you're asking for advice on an internet forum rather than from a doctor...well i'd say that right there is your biggest problem...unless...wait we are still talking about Laetrile right?

  19. Janeen Clark

exactly, the owner is thinking in the terms his society has conditioned him to, and in a way he is FORCED to, in order to make profit. this is the world we are living in for no reason.

  20. Janeen Clark

exactly, everything down to the semantics of our thinking and speaking is built from this idea of an enemy image the "good" guy and the "bad" guy , the "good" guy does horrific things to the "bad" guy because he "deserves" it.

  21. a_no_n

Actually there are very strict laws in place that demand pharmaceuticals prove themselves effective.

  22. a_no_n

if i might add my two cents in reply.

the entire reason that we have made strides in cancer research is because we've been exceptionally picky and thorough with what we've researched...simply accepting any suggestion thrown in without due consideration is the exact opposite of what we have done.

Not only is DNA different in every person, but so is Cancer.

Cancer is not a single disease, it's an umbrella term for a multitude of diseases with different causes, symptoms and growth patterns. This simple reason is why there can not and will not ever be a "Cure for cancer." it's impossible. It's like saying you've got a one stop cure for Car trouble. There's just no way you can have something that will fix either spark plugs or a burst tyre. Cancer is exactly the same. Something that treats lung cancer won't have the same effect on a stomach cancer, or lukemia, unless it's something hyper agressive like radiation therapy...literally nuking it out is the closest there will ever be to a cure, but you won't find a legitimate doctor anywhere who would dare to call it a cure, because as i said there can be no such thing.

Your cousin is a part of the very strict and stringent process of cancer research that has carefully placed us exactly where we are now in terms of knowledge...By likening real medicine to a dollars and dimes conspiracy theory you actually do your cousin a disservice by putting her right in the center of it...Though the pharmacuticul industry is a horrifying monster of a thing, the only thing you can really do about that is vote for a party that doesn't believe hospitals should be a marketplace.

there are indeed various views on the subject, but there can only be one set of facts, and the only way we will ever know those facts is by trusting in people like your cousin and the work they do.

  23. annastine

Cannabinoids are for real and a basic search of the "endocannabinoid system" will explain why. This is a Galileo moment!

  24. KC

Another conspiracy theory film, very one sided. People will try to make money off anything that remotely works as a cancer/miracle drug unless the drug is seriously dangerous and kills people, just look at the nutritional supplement market. To suggest profit motive is behind the conspiracy is simply rubbish.

  25. LostHearts

Sorry, but I have suffered and seen enough to realize that what was done to me was intense overkill and I am having the pathology reports looked over by an independent source. I believe I was railroaded and frightened into having a highly costly but lucrative surgery. I highly recommend books like "Overdiagnosis", which is a real eye opener.

Go back to these butchers? Never. I have two doctors I trust and who are open to newer and different therapies. And that includes Curcumin and marijuana. When I saw how heartless and money grubbing the top execs at the killer automakers were when faced with the deaths of those whose defective products killed and maimed so many, it is but a short leap into other businesses as well. And medicine has unfortunately become a huge business whose only goal is a big bottom line.

  26. LostHearts

Yes, it does appear that these two hold promise. Personally I believe that the answer will eventually show up when the paring of technology and further advancement into understanding an individual's DNA and what goes wrong occurs. I think nano technology may hold the key.

Meanwhile, anything which is beginning to build ever more evidence supporting even the slightest remission, slowing of tumor growth etc. deserves the highest priority. I would be one of the first to volunteer in any current research involving the two substances we have been discussing.

  27. LostHearts

My husband has been taking it with no ill effects. My problem lies in the fact that I had developed colitis several years ago and no longer have a normal digestive tract. The toxins contained in current chemo drugs are much, much more dangerous.

  28. LostHearts

I am not as ignorant as you are trying to make me out to be. Stop talking down to me. I understand about cancer--a term used in a somewhat general fashion to describe individual DNA disruption and mutation. I realize there are a lot of con artists and conspiracy theories out there. I didn't believe it until I began to seriously research some of these claims and so far curcumin and marijuana have demonstrated the potential for advancing and treating this horrible disease.

I am not doing my cousin a disservice. Her work is to be applauded. It is what may happen after people like her possibly come upon a breakthrough. It will no doubt be judged on whether or not it will be a big money maker or not.

Nor did I believe in "Big Pharma" as it is known until a number of doctors have come out and written how dubious and possibly fake conditions have been created so that the latest super expensive drug can be sold to combat something that might not even exist. The term "pre" is being bandied about as yet another scare tactic. Check out what some maverick doctors have to say. It's a real eye opener.

  29. a_no_n

Let me put this plainly, i do not think you are ignorant, i'm also not talking down to you...I'm not sugarcoating my words, because if you're suffering from something like this then you don't need them sugarcoating. I'm talking at you like an equal...i'm not picking on you, I'm an a^^hole to everyone.

First of all...Curcumin? when the hell did we start talking about Curcumin, i thought we were talking about Laetrile? Never heard of curcumin before and from what i can see on pubmed and found a study by the head of oncology at Taipai in Taiwan. it looks like their initial studies have had some interesting results, but it's still very early days..only more studies can widen the perspective and give us the full picture on it's efficacy.

The right wing have been claiming all sorts of diseases are made up for decades, Asthma, MS and ME, even PTSD sufferers face the worst of this persecution. This propaganda gets bandied about to justify welfare cuts and is nothing more than political propaganda.

Marijuana does have an effect as a medicine, but not as a treatment in itself.

Cannabis's most effective medical properties are when it is prescribed with Chemotherapy, because it is the best possible treatment for the side effects of Chemotherapy like the pain, and nausea...Cannabis is NOT a replacement or an alternative to chemotherapy. No legitimate doctor or scientist studying it has ever made that claim...It's mostly just old hippies who want to see it legalized (please note i'm smoking a spliff as i type this)

I prefer to get my information from real doctors rather than Mavericks...Maverick often being a nicer word for barred/disassociated/quack.

  30. Fabien L'Amour

The American Cancer Society is a non profit organization that has millions of volunteers and gives mostly to research faculties of universities, I don't understand how you think they can profit billions by stating positive research results are anecdotal for a chemical substance.

I encourage you to look for their 990 IRS form where all their donations are listed, where you will see dozens of 1 000 000$+ grants to Universities and Medical centers. Doesn't look like a conspiracy to me when everything is open for scrutiny by anyone with a web browser.

Also, please note that 47 scientists that received grants from the ACS have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.

  31. LostHearts

OK, I see where you are coming out. It's just that I do know there are a LOT of ignorant people out there. I have to fight with them almost daily and am frustrated by their lack of knowledge (not whether they agree with me or not, just that a lot of bad TV and the MSM has made many so DUMB). Don't want to be lumped in with them. One of the most discouraging pastimes is to go on YouTube. Pick a subject-any subject-and then watch the almost illiterate comments start to build. It's funny for a while, then it's just plain sad.

Laetrile has been flip flopping back and forth for a while now. Personally I don't think there is much to it. Curcumin looks much more hopeful compared to the snake oil being pushed all over the place. But there has got to be something better than the toxic drugs involved in chemotherapy. My hope is someday the poison and burn will be looked upon as extremely barbaric. What we need is something which targets only bad cells (and not just cancer cells, either). That will involve a merger of technology, programming and some sort of medication. Sounds like science fiction, but decades ago many of the things we have today were thought to be at least a century away.

  32. a_no_n

I should note also that when i write i do it to the crowd rather than intimately. if i'm overexplaining something it's more for the benefit of the third person reading...that probably comes across as condescending if you aren't reading it in that tone.

Anyway in reply, It's a nice thought, but unfortunately not very likely due to the nature of what must be done. nothing that is used to actively kill cells is going to be able to do it in a nice way, and unfortunately killing those cells is the best option due to their tendency to grow. It's my hope that one day it can be as simple a procedure as removing a mole, all we can realisticly do is wait and see and be happy in the knowledge that cancer survival rates are going up every single day thanks to stringent dedicated research.

  33. a_no_n

I also need to post a correction/retraction. What i said earlier (related to cyanide etc) is about Laetrile, not Curcumin. I didn't realise we were talking about the latter. apologies.

  34. LostHearts

That's OK. I just couldn't figure out how there would be cyanide in Curcumin! LOL

  35. humbled

    like with vaccines?

  36. a_no_n

    Exactly.

  37. Noelle Jordan

I think you're being very optimistic when you say that the cancer survival rates are going up every day. I'm not seeing it.

  38. hernan cortez

I don't know if this is real or fake, but knowing several people who had cancer, I can say at this point most cancer medicines seem dubious at best and most lack consistent results and so far none can consistently cure any disease

  39. James Peters

Coleys Toxins was the best bit about this film. Something that has a lot of evidence behind it (sadly not current up-to-date Phase I-III). That said, a Phase I did take place (Pubmed 22847809) and two had NED (one relapsed and one had an extra 8 injections), and 50% of those enrolled lived longer than expected

  40. James Peters

I wouldn't hold out much hope

  41. Fabien L'Amour

Research can fail, it doesn't make it less interesting to follow the science being tested.

  42. James Peters

The only study in humans so far was in British Journal of Cancer (BJC) entitled ''A pilot clinical study of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol in patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme''. It was given intratumoraly and all died (Median survival of the cohort from the beginning of cannabinoid administration was 24 weeks). GW Pharma are running two Phase I trials in people with GBM and thats about it.

  43. Fabien L'Amour

Odd that they would test THC when CDB seems to have more effects on cancer cells.

  44. lightintheshadows

Someone below mentioned that cancer was a billion $ industry, well it's a damn site more than that with an estimated 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women now getting cancer. it is suggested that economies could fall over if cures were offered. Three major changes since WW2 that have taken place since Nazi Scientists of all persuasions were drafted to the US under "Operation Paperclip". Large scale Vaccination programs, Fluoridation of public water. Introduction an implementation of GM organisms to food. There are many others but to keep it short the above will suffice.
Laertril, B17 or amygdalin as they are known are quite effective and can stop cancer in it's tracks along with cannabis oil/grease as well as specific peptides, neo-plastins and a whole host of other treatments. There are however no 100% cures as what works for you may not work for me and so on. I have absolutely no doubt they do have better treatments that will never see the light of day as it doesn't serve their interests, the sooner people wake up to this bitter pill the more responsibility they will be able to take and influence others. I used 2 of these with my so called incurable cancer and many years later I am healthy and strong, and yet how can this be anecdotal when many others I have been closely related to via family and friends have turned in pretty much the same results??? More anecdotes??

What does it take for something to be registered as beneficial "Corporate Science" if you are waiting for their stamp on anything remotely beneficial your already dead.

Firstly chemotherapy is not a therapy and once administered your immune system will never fully recover. Chemo is a mustard gas transmuted to a liquid form and pumped through your veins, it was once dumped on soldiers in the trenches in WW1 of which my great grandfather was one. He survived the war only to return home and die months later from complications. This fraudulent practice of poisoning people to save them has gone on for over 100 years and people are now seeing through it. I mean are we saying the best they can offer us in the age of quantum computing is mustard gas to treat cancer??
This is the same as driving around in internal combustion engines for 200 years and we cant find anything better, "People please wake up for goodness sake" and turn off your TV sets as the propaganda industry is bigger than the so called health industry.

Physicians scare people into having chemo and say do this or I cant help you, most people do this out of fear. I would encourage people to think long and hard about this for it it is a regret that can't be undone and when you work out the success rate of chemo which is manipulation of statistics to an unbelievable level. Hyppocrates quotes "First do no harm" so even snake oil is better than chemo. Our shadow overlords massacre us on a daily basis and even more money flows to their coffers, I mean coffins and they laugh and sneer, but one day soon there will be a French style revolution as we let go of the strings to the guillotines. Our politicians have become an extra enemy as they have sold their cheap souls to these cartels including the judicial system which we must take back. Once people discover the dark cloud that's been hanging over this planet for 200+ years change will happen.

Now trolls over to you, do your worst.

  45. Dee

My husband died of sepsis due to a cancer tumor using all the blood supply in his lung and then the tumor became necrotic. They told us surgery was not an option and I wished I would have gone elsewhere to find a surgeon to take out the lung that had a baseball size tumor in it. He died after 17 mo post diagnosis. Chemo and radiation took its toll. We weren't given any another options and unfortunately my husband didn't want to go outside of his comfort zone for treatment. He was a Vietnam Vet and exposed to Agent Orange and has quit smoking 7 years prior to diagnosis, lost weight, going on walks and riding his pedal bike to work. It is a devastating disease and unfortunately you just have to follow the money because as long as there is big bucks, Big Pharma and politicians and Doctors alike don't really care about their patients.

  46. Sid

Mem. Sloan Kettering cured cancer in 1896 and now they can't ? The cancer Industrial complex and its 'treatment' (not cures) provides $50 billion/year in profits. The first three doctors conducting two different tests at the FDA found results from Amygdalin as very positive. ALL 3 were pulled from the research.

In the FDA letter dismissing [it] as non-performing, even stated that if pharma could find something (they could patent) in the the same cyno family of drugs, then they would be interested. I wonder why ? You think because amygdalin can't be patented ? The FDA is the second most corrupt federal agency in the US govt. and deep in the pockets of big pharma.

Oh and BTW, non-profits make Billion$ in 'non' profits and have bureaucracies with among the highest paid executives and staff in all of 'business' and their research and grant money all goes out... to the same people. Why?

  47. Linda Duff

What ever anyone says, writes or thinks. I have managed to shrink a maligns at tumour that my dog has by giving him crushed up apricot kernels. I'm a sceptic of all things and a non conspiracy theorist. But I have photographs to prove this. Oh and I have no reason to tell lies.

  48. Dj

Before making any statement, negative or positive, read the book a world without cancer from Griffin!

  49. Voice of Reason

I'm convinced none of you watched the documentary or looked into this further, but rather just commented your own incorrect assumptions and ideas. Cancer is a vitamin deficiency disease like scurvy or pellagra. The vitamin is named Vitamin B17. This is the active ingredient in laetrile. The most concentrated source of B17 is found in apricot seeds. They are literally dirt cheap. There is no money in eating apricot seeds. Please for the sake of yourself, your loved ones, and humanity watch "A World Without Cancer" by G. Edward Griffin on youtube and read the book of the same title by the same author. Then actually watch this documentary and then comment on here. Cancer can be stopped tomorrow and this genocide can be stopped.

  50. BM

Wow it takes a unique form of online stupidity, moral turpitude or perhaps forlorn hope to say that Laetrile (a cyanogen like cyanide) is not "harmful".

  51. dharmenendra

Ummmm...amygdalin is a complex sugar containing cyanide. The cyanide is not released until the amygdalin is either broken down in your gut by pancreatic enzymes (and why you don't want to eat too many apricot pits, apple seeds, peach pits etc. at once, cos it WILL poison you) OR broken down by the cancer cell (doesn't matter what kind of cancer, the mechanism at the heart of the tumour/illness is the same) as a way of getting the oxygen out of the complex sugar molecule to live. Because all cancer cells are anaerobic, they can live without getting oxygen the way normal cells do, and can thus thrive in unhealthy situations where normal cells are succumbing. So, ONLY a cancer cell breaks down amygdalin/sugar molecule, gets poisoned by the cyanide and dies. If you administer the amydalin / B-17/laetrile (which is short for a really long chemical name that really exists!) by injection there's no release of poison except at the site of the tumour. And cancer happens because our own stem cells, which are already all over our bodies, try to repair something wrong and mistakenly go into a stage they're only supposed to enter during pregnancy.......this stuff was published in the JAMA in 1958 and is not rocket science....it's biology. It is explained scientifically in numerous locations, for those who actually want to learn. And yes, cannabis and other compounds hold major hope, but the point made so many time about profit motive in this debacle would not apply to either laetrile, or cannabis in this case. Natural sources of the active chemicals are abundant and extraction is not expensive or difficult, thus removing the profit motive altogether and scattering the "snake oil salesmen' to much more profitable endeavors, such as pharmaceuticals.
