End DayEnd Day is a docu-drama produced by the BBC, that depicts various doomsday scenarios. The documentary follows the fictional scientist Dr. Howell, played by Glenn Conroy, as he travels from his London hotel room to his laboratory in New York City, and shows how each scenario affects his journey as well as those around him, with various experts providing commentary on that specific disaster as it unfolds.

Mega-Tsunami. In this scenario, a volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma triggers a massive landslide wherein a sizable portion of the island collapses into the sea, causing a massive mega-tsunami to race across the Atlantic ocean and strike the east coast of the United States, inundating most of New York City, but leaving many buildings intact.

Killer Asteroid. This scenario begins with a mysterious missile attack in a remote area somewhere in the Middle East. The missiles are soon revealed to be small asteroid fragments, the advance guard of a much larger asteroid on a collision course with Earth, threatening Berlin, Germany. The asteroid is located and an attempt is made to alter its course using nuclear ICBMs. The attempt fails, resulting in the asteroid being broken into hundreds of smaller pieces with the biggest piece then impacting and obliterating Berlin.

Global Pandemic. In this scenario, a mysterious virus similar to SARS or influenza is unleashed, wreaking havoc as it spreads at a phenomenal rate throughout Europe, the UK, and North America, prompting many countries to enact martial law and close their borders in a frantic attempt to quarantine the spread of the disease, but are unsuccessful.

Supervolcano. This scenario is based on the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park erupting, incinerating everything within 100 km and releasing ash into the atmosphere which cools the earth. This segment has only aired in the UK. This scenario was explored in depth in another BBC docudrama, Supervolcano.

Strange Matter. This is the only scenario in which Dr. Howell reaches his laboratory unhindered, with people protesting, and shouting,"STOP THE EXPERIMENT!" outside. Upon arrival, he and his colleagues initiate a highly controversial experiment using the world's largest particle accelerator. The experiment quickly goes out of control, resulting in the creation of a new type of matter called a strangelet, which begins to consume and destroy all matter around it, starting with New York City. The phenomenon wreaks havoc on Earth's weather systems and atmosphere, and eventually leads to Earth's off-screen destruction.

On June 9th, 2009, i recorded the edited version of this program that had only 4 of the 5 segments on the ''NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL''. I still have it. Yesterday, i went on ''E-BAY'' and found that it was available on d.v.d. It contains the 4 segments including the previously edited ''VOLCANIC ERUPTION'' segment. So for the first time ever, i'll see this segment. I give this program 4 stars.

Even though this movie is science fiction is shows in many ways that the earth could come to an end with very powerful forces. I found it intriguing to watch.

Missed one of the more realistic ones. Nuclear conflict..the odds might be thousands to one (on any given day) but while they are in existence the dice is still being rolled, every day.... Think of it this way, if you buy your lotto ticket and check the numbers with a belief that you have a chance of winning at odds of millions to one.....

I have been trying to locate this movie clip this is a great site I hope it stays online. My thoughts about this movie is that I believe that their informing us about what could happen at any given day. We pay our taxes, sheep goes to church, this is a great movie, I don't think this is just a movie wake up their once again trying to tell the sleeping sheep to stop sleeping.

Christians, Muslims, and Jews will make sure that the rapture comes to bear. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Those lunatics will end life as we know it. Give them all a big hug for their efforts before it's too late.

Once again, thanks Vlat, great film.

I dont think it as a documentary so much, kinda like a docu-drama/ low budget movie, but yea. I enjoyed it.

Just want to comment on a couple of things said by Pete, seems to be the most vocally opposed to the ideas in this film.

"First scenario: The devastation in east coast cities from a 500m wave would be at least 1000 times worse than depicted, and evacuation just plain would not happen."

Seems as random a statment as anyother ive heard. How are you quantifying that 1000 times worse? A guess? And with 3 hours time scale at least some evacuation will have taken place. The Island they were talking about IS suspected of partial colapse at some point in the future.

"Third scenario: A virus outbreak as fast as shown is complete science fiction, and a government response that fast is even more impossible."

If something like Ebola got on a plane then a huge proportion of the worlds population is at risk.... scientists saying 60-90%!! There are cures, or at least treatment but it has to be early and fast. However, I think influenzas our biggest threat at the moment and a mutated strain could cause big problems.

"Fourth scenario: Yellowstone would not just sneak up on us like that. We’d have at least 6mo to a year warning. BTW: It’s only the 2nd biggest. the biggest one is in Indonesia."

in the program they did actually say that "yellowstone has been giving off warning for the last 18 months".... if i remember correctly. The one in Indonesia you mentioned is, I assume, Toba, but that erupted a mere 75,000 years ago, as opposed to yellowstones 650 odd thousand years ago. The fact is that either of these erupting, or any of the other, I think theres about a dozen supervolcanos recognised, any of those erupting would cause a vocanic winter causing global crop failture, adverse weather and lots of other horrible stuff :)

"Fifth scenario: Absolutely the most science fiction of all.
the is absolutely no risk of a large accelerator destroying the earth. None whatsoever."

Wow, you should work for cern. :) Ive never heard any scientist back up your statment with such conviction. Ive heard them say its extreamly unlikely. Ive heard 1 billion to 1 and ive heard it could happen but would be so small as to disappear before doing any damage. But I cant remember hearing anyone so assured as you. Do you mind if i ask your cerditials to be so certain? :)

TL:DR - Just take it with a pinch of salt. Anyone of these scinerios COULD happen, so could a whole lot of other things. Something WILL happen sooner or later. The only questions are will humans still be alive, will we still be living (solely/ primarly) on Earth, and will be able to take any defensive measure to protect ourselves.

My Niece asked me the other day if the world was going to end. I said yes. It absolutly will end.... sooner or later. Why worry about it when it could be tomorrow in the blink or an eye or in 5 billion years when the sun runs out of hydrogen.

Pinch of salt my friends pinch of salt. We can either do something about it, in which case we live.... or we cant then we wont and theres no point in freaking out about something like that.

Lets face it, a human life is a blink of an eye in geological terms. So Yellowstone hasnt erupted for 640,000 years and its right about due.... well... im 31 so if it takes more then... 40 odd years chances are i wont be here and 40 years is nothing when you've waited round 640,000 :)

@Pete

You need to loosen up ...

Have a scotch or something and enjoy yourself ...

This was a fun film to watch, of course some of it can be debunked and may be nonsense ... but there's no need to nitpick it like that, that just makes you the person no one wants to bring to the party.

As far as the doc goes, I think it was great. The special effects were nice for something so low budget, and the overall message that life/civilization as we know it can end at anytime is really driven home.

I'd recommend watching it, it was much better than that movie 2012 by far.

Really, folks. This "documentary" is phenomenally bad.

First scenario: The devastation in east coast cities from a 500m wave would be at least 1000 times worse than depicted, and evacuation just plain would not happen.

Second scenario: A meteor that big would just hit, any government announcement would just cause more panic. they would likely keep their mouths shut. And less than a day away any attempt at diversion is impossible.

Third scenario: A virus outbreak as fast as shown is complete science fiction, and a government response that fast is even more impossible.

Fourth scenario: Yellowstone would not just sneak up on us like that. We'd have at least 6mo to a year warning. BTW: It's only the 2nd biggest. the biggest one is in Indonesia.

Fifth scenario: Absolutely the most science fiction of all.
the is absolutely no risk of a large accelerator destroying the earth. None whatsoever.

Whoever made this trash should be ashamed of themselves. This certainly does not qualify as a documentary. It doesn't even qualify as good TV. What amazes me is that someone actually got paid to make this nonsense.

Out of all of these possibilities, I feel that a deadly flu pandemic is the most likely. There are already flu viruses that have come out of Asia that have a 60% death rate. Thankfully, they've all been very bad at spreading from human to human -- only a few hundred have died. The problem is that these viruses mutate extremely quickly for two reasons:

1) They are based on RNA rather than DNA, so their rates of genetic mutations are higher due to the far more error-prone RNA copying mechanism
2) People who already have a highly virulent strain of the common flu (which hundreds of millions of people get each year) can get infected with a more deadly strain at the same time (through handling poultry, for instance)... if the two viruses are within the same cell, they can combine into a new virus that is both highly virulent and highly deadly...

Projected death rate in the above scenario? 1 billion.

this was good. i liked it. and the thing about it is that the earth is on borrowed time when it comes to alot of these things. even if its not as extreme. the chances that a meteor coming down and wiping out half of a densely populated city, the chances visuvius (SP) erupts and takes out half of italy, with globalization and virus like sars or drug resistant bacteria is isnt far off, there is cases of teburkulosis tb that becoming immune to all forms of antibiotics, the wave seems a little improbable but i forgot, it happened to some asian place and crazy amounts died and they had way more time to get people out of the area. so i believe that some of this is bound to happen cuz right now the odds are getting beat on all these issues

Hey Danby, antibiotics dont work against viruses. You know, since they are not bacteria? And what if the virus is air-borne and has a long incubation period? It could spread world wide and noone would notice until it was too late. The virus part is all about a "perfect storm" virus with all the best qualities for killing us. And you completely ignore the fact that black holes dont just pop up randomly, the energy required to form a black hole is enormous, like for example, lets say a sun collapsing in on itself? Thats a little bit more than what the bb shooter the LHC proportionally is, if it forms it will simply evaporate because its so unstable and unable to keep itself up.

I like how the first 4 rediculasly implausible ones are 'likely' to happen, but the one man made one is completely implausible ;) Ha ha ha.

There will never be a pandemic like the spanish flu again. They didn't have anti-biotics back then. They didnt have respirators back then. They didn't have anti-viral drugs, or antiseptic toiletries, or vaccinations plus everyone was stuck on boats for weeks at a time just after a war.

On top of that, the spanish flu with all these things working against it only had a mortality rate of 10%. People make it sound like it was the black death or something.
