An idyllic corner of the United States, specifically the city of Coeur d'Alene in North Idaho, is now ground zero for a socio-cultural and political movement that has been quietly growing over the last few years.

Coeur d'Alene is one of the least diverse places in America, where 90 of the population is white and Christian. It is now also the home of choice for many disappointed and angry Trump supporters, extremely conservative Christians, hard-core supporters of the second amendment, and doomsday preppers.

They are all living in what is known as the American Redoubt. The Redoubt is a movement of like-minded people from all over America who wish to assemble and live together (in north Idaho) in preparation for the unlikely event that the economy will tank and lawlessness and anarchy will reign.

They are unsatisfied with the government and how they are running the country, and they wish to be self-sufficient and that Christian principles must be followed by civil society. While they are well within their rights to gather together, there is the potential for them to be manipulated or exploited by religious/political extremists who plan to secede from the government.

Chris Walsh is a real estate agent who has been doing brisk business selling properties to new redoubters, those that have left the big cities to relocate to a place where they feel they can be free to be who they want to be and believe what they want to believe. They also want to live off the grid to stay safe and self-sufficient if society breaks down. He says many property buyers are fleeing the places they are initially from out of fear.

This fear stems from living in crime and corruption infested cities, and they want to escape and live in a peaceful, clean and quiet rural area surrounded by other "patriots." Security and defensibility are big selling points for redoubt property seekers.

The area also holds a special place in the very dark history of white supremacy. In 1973, Richard Butler set up the headquarters for the Aryan Nation, an extremely violent racist organization. They were anti-Semitic, anti-black and espoused neo-Nazi beliefs. The group and its supporters would often go to the city center of Coeur d'Alene dressed up in complete Klu Klux Klan outfits and Nazi uniforms. They would constantly harass and bully people. The group fell apart in the aftermath of when they attacked a native American woman and her son, beating them severely. The group was also declared a terrorist threat in 2001 by the FBI.

Today, the American redoubt movement is gaining traction. The spokesperson is Matt Shea, an unapologetic, far-right Christian nationalist and former US Republican Congressman. He was accused of domestic terrorism and supported a plan to replace the government with a theocracy. As for the future of the Redoubt, there is no doubt that the movement will probably keep growing, just like the current American political divide.

"i've come here to find out if it also encorages domestic terrorism, religious extremism, and a white ethnostate."

What a smug rick you are. Do you presume to have clearly shown any of these things with your “documentary”? Quite the opposite.

generalisssimo Ozzie Knezovich, Sheriff, Spokane County: LOL!

I saw “Inside the American Redoubt” on YouTube, it was interesting but Alastair Good the Director made no attempt to put any perspective on the Redoubt movement but was pretty good in using local Sheriffs to speculate that the Redoubt members were just retread right wing extremists! Being a 68 year old white guy growing up and still living in L.A. , when traditional values were common in both parties, no one said they these parties were extremist! Oh now just the Trump Republicans are extremists! You Aussie’s have no idea what the extremism is from the Left? This documentary was really a cleverly disguised piece of left wing propaganda. If I’m wrong then please let me know which documentaries I can view about the progressive extremism in the Democratic Party, the party of Joe Biden, AOC, Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders and their Marxist policies and beliefs!

I haven't seen 'Q-anon' do anything, actually, but I have certainly seen antifa and BLM do PLENTY of destruction all across the country. And I don't want to live with them. I don't want to do business with them. That's my right.

Folks who have never been in the beautiful State of Idaho, they need to know there is a town known as Ketchum and Hailey, Sun Valley, where many Hollywood Movie Stars and Directors etc all have massive homes, have lived there for decades, and of course some of these famous people may be Jewish and so why would they wish to live in a State that this stupid film is showing as if it was, or is, a haven for idiotic Nazi types. Im waiting for the Director to make a movie about the blacks that want to make SE USA a black Nation, or the muslim Arabs would like to make Minnesota a sharia complainant area... Guess not huh?
This documentary is way out of date and W.A.R. the ultimate moronic Nazi group was based out of San Diego California, close to the Mexican Border.
It seems to be thought of as bad if white people wish to live among other white people but its okay if black people, or muslims, or Mexicanss, or any group wish to live among their own kind, but I guess its only white folks that must be diverse and not any other folks, personally being a white guy I have never had any trouble living among white folks though right now Ive been living in SE Asia for decades but if I could afford it I would move up to Moscow, Idaho, or the surrounding area because its gods own land, near Montana.

32 year resident of North Idaho here. This "documentary" is so out of touch with the reality of this wonderful place. Sure, I remember the Richard Butler compound and his tiny faction of idiots that made national news, placing a stigma on the rest of us. I witnessed one of their little marches back in '99. It was literally like a 20 person parade with most of the hateful rhetoric coming from the sidelines. Without MSM sensationalism, they would have faded to oblivion without any help.
Yes, we don't like big government, we look after one another when in need, and we like to be left alone. Why would the filmmaker interview the Dem party leader and not the other side? Why would he interview Spokane County sheriff and not Kootenai County? This so called documentary is garbage and a waste of time if you're looking for the truth. It's obvious this horse's ass director is a biased POS. Can anyone make a factual documentary anymore?

Interesting and a little concerning. Especially the rejection of truth and fact.

Both the left and the right are so divided you can't even find unbiased documentaries anymore. You can clearly see this journalist is left and wants to make a mockery of these people by only showing interviews with the hard right or victimized people who are clearly left.
When you can determine the target audience (the left in this case) for a "documentary" it's not a real documentary...
