Prescription for Disaster

Prescription for DisasterVioxx is a terrible tragedy and a profound regulatory failure. I would argue that the FDA as currently configured is incapable of protecting America against another Vioxx. We are virtually defensiveless. It is important that this committee and the important people understand that what happened with Vioxx is really a symptom of something far more dangerous to the safety of the American people. Simply put, FDA and the Center of Drug Evaluation and Research are broken.

Prescription for Disaster is an in-depth investigation into the symbiotic relationships between the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA,lobbyists, lawmakers, medical schools, and researchers, and the impact this has on consumers and their health care. During this thorough investigation, we take a close look at patented drugs, why they are so readily prescribed by doctors, the role insurance companies and HMO's play in promoting compliance, and the problem of rising health care costs.

We examine the marketing and public relations efforts on behalf of the pharmaceutical companies, including sales reps, medical journals and conferences. Further, we look at alternatives to traditional pharmacology and drug therapy, such as vitamins and nutritional supplements, and why they are often perceived as a competitive threat to the drug manufacturers. Alternative therapies also include diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Prescription for Disaster takes you on a journey through the tangled web of big business, the way disease is treated today, and the consequences we suffer as a society.

I watched war on health yesterday and it was pretty much the same as this. Some valid points are raised but then the documentary goes on to push quackery as a real alternative.

    Drugs work!

And about harmonizing laws, why are they afraid about vitamins becoming drugs? You don't need a prescription to buy vitamins in Europe. Besides if that doctor thinks "eurodose" is too low, why don't you pop more pills in your patient? You know, I would not want EU laws to become like in US, otherwise I'd live in US already.

57:17 - from that point on, it is outrageous what Jim Turner is talking about... Unimaginable.

It is so good to see these documentaries like this one .I am so tied of seeing people suffering and believing they have done all they can because they have been to the GP.GP's don't treat the cause and rarely give advise and just prescribe dangerous chemical drug concoctions .Always read the side effects and ' just say no '. And remember SAFE to them means it only kills 1 in a million ,the other 999,999 became sick so its still SAFE.

Krishna preaches Ayurveda and to nourish the soul .Its free to learn to meditate on the supreme ,there is not a 569,000 % mark up like the price of Xanax ,names like these alone should put you off ( Ana is no more,x ana x ,Axe ana Axe) ,so chant your way over to your local Krishna Temple and nourish your soul, chant .....

The close ties the pharma industry has with government is a political and institutional failure, not a failure of modern western medicine. Many industries in the US are far too close to their governing agencies.
I find it some what hypocritical of the alt med industry in that they criticize the FDA of fast-tracking pharam meds to the market and then criticize the same body for not allowing them to make statements and claims regarding alt-med treatments which have not been proven in rigorous clinical trials.
The pharma industry and its relationship with the FDA is a problem, yes. But alt-med is not the solution. Alt-med is also a massive industry of its own, and it is rightly worried about such things as the codex alimentarius which would make it harder to sell treatments and make claims without real evidence.
Lastly, most doctors are not going to disagree with statements like, "eat more veggies" and "exercise more." Doing these two things will improve your health and you need not take one alt med treatment to do it.

A Gary Null film; watch with appropriate skepticism and perspective.
