The feature film for Sharkwater - internationally award winning documentary by Rob Stewart For Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure.
What it turned into was a dangerous journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.
Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the worlds shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure begins with a battle between the Sea Shepherd boat and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives.
Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey. Each year 100 million sharks are caught to meet the demand for shark fin soup in Asia. Despite surviving the earths history of mass extinctions, sharks could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.
Destruction of shark populations is a major problem for oceanic ecosystems, and all life on earth, as 70% of our oxygen comes from life in the seas. Stewarts journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the worlds sharks into a fight for his life, and that of humankind.
This is an amazing documentary, everyone should watch it. And all of you who eat shark fin soup or contribute to its market in any way (fat chance those people will be on this page but still) be ashamed of yourselves.
Also Rob Stewart died in an diving accident earlier this year (2017), he was in the process of filming a sequel to this documentary. R.I.P :( A huge loss
110% agree with Brett.... Shark finning is like taking elephant tusks! It's inhuman and wasteful! And just plan wrong!
Is this the Video that has Capt, Watson of the Sea Shepards in it, where he engages the Shark fin boat. The same reason he is now in Jail in Germany? I ask cause if so, I would like to watch it. If you have watched this video, please comment. Thank you.
yes m8 the "valedero" is the boat illegaly fishing in costa rican waters and now paul watson is in jail in germany waiting extridition go figure free him now sharks and are oceans need saving.
Humans have become so arigant and greedy theirs no stopping us tillthe most precious thing that was ever ginin to us is earth
i love sharks so much i like the attacks and crap like that
I love sharks ..so much , and the fact that I can't do nothing about it , to protect thouse species ,I am shamed , I am shamed about my self , I am shamed that we live in thouse days and this edge , when no one anymore cares as long the profit is there - if someone else would sacrifice us ,like we do with sharks -how would u feel your self ? knowing that can't protect them selfs and are a easy target ! ..knowing that thei are essential to our envierment ,and finnaly to our existence ,putting them into danger it's like knowing it , you will put an end to your self and truh u ,to our selfs ! where is the humanity gone ?!!? an unbelivibile story and a great documentarry !
Rob came aboard as photographer for my documentary "Deeps Asia" on location in the Mergui Archipelago prior to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami (Acheh). The sea was filled with glass fish & plankton, with intense predatory & mating behavior set off by an "internal wave" (column of warmed water) due to seismic activity off north western Sumatra. Shortly after returning to Canada, Rob took up motion filming underwater.
Wow what a great documentary.
I used to have hostile view towards sharks. But looking at numbers of deaths done to sharks by humans vs sharks next tme there is a shart attack on a human i may not feel bad. I may actually cheer for the sharks....
Audio on the video is too low sadly, cant hear much.
I've seen the documentary "Sharkwater" by Rob Stewart, and listened to his theory it's just a sin to know that ' Sharks are top selling food chain ' and have been slaughtered everyday. I hope the killing of sharks would be stopped so that they don't endanger the species that is left.
I'm embarrassed by my own culture.
I've seen the documentary "Sharkwater" by Rob Stewart, and listened to his theory of the oceans' top predator - Sharks are at the top of the oceans’ food chain, and have been systematically slaughtered, and with the assistance of many GOVERNMENTS too - its creating a much bigger environmental disaster, than just the premeditated act, of causing a species to become endangered, or perhaps extinct.
Costa Rica’s government was one in particular – the sad thing is - Costa Rica is sold to world travelers as an Eco-tourist destination - the GOVERNMENT there was actively engaged with some low life "Taiwanese Mafia" types, who were the ones most determined to slaughter as many sharks as possible - cutting off all their fins (fining) from their bodies, while they were still alive - then simply throwing them back into the sea - they helplessly sank to the bottom to die.
The sharks are at the top of their food chain for a very important reason – they control the plankton eating fishes – as a result of millions of sharks having been exterminated, for monetary profit in the billions, especially for the Taiwanese shark fin hunters, which is mostly used for a Chinese delicacy “Shark Fin Soup” – the earth’s atmosphere is being affected…
The sharks are there to control the populations of these plankton eating fishes – now that the latter is growing exponentially in sizes, and eating as much plankton as they can – the ocean produces far less oxygen as it did before, and thus, contributing to an extreme rise in carbon dioxide CO2 levels.
Where are the government mandated bans, on shark fishing?
Why did Al Gore et al., (warmers), not voice any concerns about this very real and, damaging situation to our environment?
Save Caribou and Wolves?
Save the Sharks?
Special thanks to Rob Stewart et al., great documentary!
Awesome documentary. Really hammers home just how stupid and ignorant many people are about sharks. I think this should be mandatory viewing for everyone, people need to know the facts about sharks and not base there opinions on fictional information. Then again, millions of people get their news from Fox so I guess we're all doomed!
well done, good work and excellent reality. Truth is that we should take care of our environment, treasure and enjoy it...we are all earthlings...we all have a right to live in this world.
Your misspelling of "than" is the real joke.
The comments about this documentary are more of a joke then the documentary itself
Vlatko you have my undying respect and admiration for what you have achieved on this site, as the information contained here is invaluable. Many many thanks.
But now the plesantries aside, How would people like it if they were hunted and caught purely for their limbs and nothing else?! And once they were caught they had their limbs hacked off, then they were thrown away, discarded like someone discards an empty soda bottle, with no thought given to their suffering, and most probably, are laught at as they try to wriggle and writhe away to safety just like those fishermen do at the shark trying to swim away but having no effect as they have just removed that sharks limbs!
This brings me to my ultimate question, WHY DO THE FISHERMAN DO IT!?
MONEY & GREED!! That's why they do it cause they need money to buy food, pay their rent and put clothes on their backs for themselves and their families. And those that exploit the fishermen and their families have only greed as their insentive because they most likely live a luxurious life of plenty.
However, what if their was no monetary insentive for these fisherman to go out and use their destructive means of catching fish and other aquatic life? But that question leads us down a whole different path and off topic of this documentary still it is linked to it and everything else that we do on this planet!
I salute the people who have the courage to stand up and fight for what is right. That non-violent, non-cooperation and non-participation is the way forward. Ghandi and Martin Luther King proved that point all too well. I just hope I have the same strength of mind and character to do the same, if the situation requires it of me.
I trust you are either a person with a wicked sense of humor with your tongue planted firmly in your cheek or else you are deliberately trying to raise the hackles of as many viewers of this doc as possible.
To set the record straight, shark fin soup uses the fins only for said/imagined medicinal benefits & for texture. The fins actually add no flavour & little substance to the soup. Again, it is only added for texture & supposed health benefits. What ever it is you liked about the soup, it was more than likely the fish stock or chicken broth that you found pleasing. Chewing on a shark's fin would be only slightly different than chewing on a tendon.
With all that said, I still trust that you were indeed just trying to be funny.
Well, its not funny anymore.. :P
I'm not getting any sound out of this video. It seems to be there but I have both the external vol. controll and the window player volume all the way up and only get a wisper. Any thing that can be done? Thanks again
Works fine for me @audiophile. It's on your end.
I'm only getting a very low volume level on this doc too. It's a shame, it looks good.
Shark Fin Soup is really good ^_^
It is really heartwarming to witness the passion of these folk who are not part of the cancer mankind can be. Keep it up and lets all help in our own way to get the message through.
I wish They had sank that boat, its not like the human population is under threat of extinction and dont give me any bull about the poor feelings of the poor fisherman. People only understand violence, ook at the world we live in. This plannet is so doomed.
Wow, that was unexpectedly moving. I too had to get past his voice. At the beginning it really irritated me but I got over it. The music was artful and beautiful which helped add some emotional weight to the whole thing. We have so entirely lost perspective of balance and how our planet works. I hate to be a pessimist but short of a drastic awareness change, we might be doomed. We are so so so shortsighted as a species right now. A Native American elder said something to the effect of: the white man kills his grandchildren to feed his children, and now the whole world has learned to do the same. We can't even begin to solve the ecological problems until we address the greed and out of control distribution of wealth that, as this film cited, kills 8 million a year through starvation. I have a five year old and a two and half year old, what can I tell them to expect for their children? At the end of the day, I guess I just have to make responsible choices for myself and pray that billions more people decide to do the same.
I just wanted to add. I realise Paul Watson can be hard to take in large doses. I have actually met the man back in the early 80's. I was working for a sail training organization at the time & his ship tide up along the dock that we were tied up to in B.C. Canada at the time to be repainted/refitted. This was the original Rainbow Warrior & unfortunately was sunk shortly after my tour of the vessel. I can assure you however, their ultimate intention is not to challenge other Nation's laws, but to salvage the lives of our oceans' majestic creatures. If you paid attention you would have noticed that most of these fishermen they were confronting were breaking the laws themselves with their fishing. Surely you understand. You come across as an intelligent person so you must understand the importance of maintaing the correct ecological balance on our fragile planet. I think it is a good sign that you responded to this documentary & other's comments. I have a feeling you are a fisherman but aware of the global plight of diminished aquatic species.
Please understand when I say first of all: I admire you in your ability to communicate in more than your native language. Obviously english is not your native language. Honestly, my hat is off to you for your ability & time spent learning a new language. With that said my friend, I fear that you have missed the point of this film. Perhaps it is due to certain inflections or nuances in the language that you did not understand or pick up. At any rate, I understand where you are coming from but do not believe you understand where this film maker is coming from. Please watch "End of the Line" & if you don't understand it all, please ask a friend who is fluent in English to interpret for you. It is imperative for you to comprehend this so that we might all live & pursue a common goal of the survival of our planet. Cheers mate!
Watch it again hitting other peoples boat or ship violently try to kill that’s why authority charge them but they run away if they were right then they should face court, now calling me violent you showing yourself how civilised you are? you are just ignorant that can't see that good work need to be done by legally not illegally, if don't respect other peoples and their country law then you must not be respected nobody is superior Watson and shepherd wasted good work by breaking other country law. Go to the read me first and then write don’t go personnel Mr. Genius. I am not the person do something good with wrong way or somebody trust me and allow me to talk or enter in their premises then I filmed them with hidden camera.
i flagged your other comment because your to ignorant
Jali, that is why you are a violent ahole, you are missing the entire point, Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd have never killed or hurt another human being. Your statement does not even make sense, who was trying to kill who? you are confused.
Instead to give them award for this documentary they should be punished to break other countries law for trying to sink small boat and kill humans, who the hell is Paul and company and who give them authority to make ship with blade to destroy other ship or boats if they try to do this to me, my boat in my country if I can I will do worse to them, other peoples doing cruelty what the hell you been doing? Is this the solution for stopping not killing sharks?
Just speechless at the ignorance and stupidity of the one species that thinks it is intelligent.
@ Brett, well said.
I watched the first 5 minutes of this and had to stop it. Though I am sure it may be a decent documentary, I just can't stand to listen to his stoner voice, duuuuuude.
He may not have the perfect narrating voice, but it's a powerful documentary and worth watching. I think you're missing out on something very profound
very good effective work and documentation
this dude did make a change or a move to change
Wow for real? you guys are taking this as a joke? Watch End of the Line or just listen to what scientist are saying, Its not just sharks but most fish in the oceans that are endangered. I find it funny that people are so ignorant and wont listen to scientist just to make a quick dollar now. In Nova Scotia when the Canadian Government put a moratorium on Cod Fish, there where mass revolts, but this is what is needed for fish to recover. People might suffer now with less profit but in 40 years, EVERYONE WILL SUFFER. This world is sick and we are the virus, we have come so far from living in caves and discovered so much, but it is mind boggling how we have forgotten that we are apart of this world and not above it. We can not rape and pillage how we please with no consequences.
so i asume phillip, your age is 9 or 10 , and the images of people killing sharks are to hard for you ?
was a very interesting feature lenth film about fishes
This is good if you are 12.
Yeah happy ending. I used to sell shark and eat it. Tastes good.
Awesome,.. lets all shave with a dull razor and go swimming,. yeah !
