The decades-long entanglement of high-level US politics with Russian interests is not a sudden phenomenon but rather the culmination of a sustained intelligence strategy. Russian security services, historically the KGB, sought influential figures - especially businessmen who possessed significant ego, ambition, and, crucially, financial vulnerability - like Donald Trump. As far back as the late 1980s, during a time of serious business distress, Trump checked all the boxes on the KGB's checklist for suitable targets.

The primary lure was not political ideology but capital. With Trump's business ventures floundering and debt mounting in the US, the desperation for new financing sources opened the door to complex real estate deals involving individuals tied to Russian organized crime and money looking to be diversified abroad. The ultimate prize became the prospect of a Trump Tower in Moscow. This project became a key piece of leverage, requiring the Kremlin's tacit approval and transforming a business deal into a potential tool for compromise, especially given Russian intelligence's documented surveillance of foreigners visiting Moscow.

This historical access appears to have created an enduring influence that played out on the world stage years later. Immediately following his initial 1987 visit to Moscow, Trump unexpectedly funded full-page newspaper ads to argue against the US paying to defend NATO allies - a core, long-standing Soviet objective. This pattern of alignment, whether due to conscious cooperation or sheer coincidence, culminated in the 2016 election cycle, where Russian cyber interference created a diversion, weakening his opposing candidate at a crucial moment.

Once in the White House, the echoes of this relationship continued to shape policy. A private meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki was quickly followed by Trump publicly questioning US intelligence agencies. Later, military aid vital to Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression was leveraged, frozen in an effort to force political investigations based on theories promoted by Russian agents.

The narrative reveals a sustained, opportunistic campaign aimed at achieving Russia's strategic goals: the disruption of Western alliances, the delegitimization of internal US institutions, and the ultimate weakening of American support for its allies abroad.
