"This is Gaza" plunges viewers into the heart of the 2023 conflict between Israel and Hamas through the eyes of Yousef, a Palestinian journalist whose life in Gaza is irrevocably transformed. The film opens with a poignant glimpse into Yousef's life in the Jabalia refugee camp, a place defined by a strong sense of community and the joy found in simple celebrations.

This idyllic existence is shattered without warning as war erupts, engulfing Gaza in a maelstrom of violence. Yousef and his family are forced to flee their home, narrowly escaping its destruction in a devastating bombing raid. Suddenly, he is thrust into the role of witness, documenting the unfolding horror around him.

The film follows Yousef's harrowing journey as he navigates the escalating violence and widespread devastation. He captures the raw reality of the war, including the agonizing loss of friends, family, and neighbors in indiscriminate bombings. He portrays the profound psychological impact of constant bombardment and the ever-present threat of death, revealing the deep scars etched into the community.

As the conflict intensifies, Yousef and his family are repeatedly displaced, forced to move from one increasingly precarious "safe zone" to another. Each move brings new hardships: dwindling resources, the breakdown of essential services, and the constant struggle for survival. The film unflinchingly exposes the growing humanitarian crisis, depicting the desperate fight for food and water, the overwhelmed medical system, and the chaos that ensues as people are pushed to the brink. Yousef's camera captures the heartbreaking scenes of families torn apart, children suffering unimaginable trauma, and the growing desperation of a population trapped in a war zone.

Ultimately, faced with the unbearable violence and the need to protect his family, Yousef makes the agonizing decision to leave Gaza. This choice, however, is not a simple escape. It represents a profound loss – the loss of his home, his community, his memories, and his sense of belonging. "This is Gaza" is more than just a chronicle of war; it is a powerful testament to the resilience of the Palestinian people in the face of unimaginable suffering. It is a harrowing account of the war's devastating impact on individuals, families, and an entire community.

Through Yousef's personal journey, the film becomes a plea for basic human rights, an urgent call for an end to the ongoing violence, and a stark reminder of the long-lasting consequences of conflict. It leaves viewers with a profound understanding of the human cost of war and a lingering question: what will become of Gaza and its people?

  1. It's interesting that when he saw the pillagers on Oct 7, he thought "this is going to be bad"... no it is bad and shameful. All of the hundreds of millions that were given to Gaza were spent on war tunnels.....so Yousef had been neighbors with Barbaric Hamas kidnappers who brought hostages into his building.... was this the first time that he understood how radical Hamas was? Why did Yousef allow Hamas to build military bases under schools and hospitals? He is surprised at the suffering of children when his Hamas government hides behind the children to attack Israel, At this point, was Yousef more afraid of Israel or Hamas? None of these Gaza reporters have the courage to interview their "Hamas neighbors." The Hamas terrorists continue to hold hostages....did Yousef ever ask to interview the hostages? Arab Palestinians have been trained to hate Israelites since childhood, so nothing new.... a better documentary would have been what Arab Palestinians think of Hamas (who chose to kill the Jewish children on October 7) Why did Hamas bomb the escape routes? This documentary is wrong; it turns out that Hamas was (and is) shooting Arab Palestinians who are getting humanitarian food? Yousef is blind... blaming Israel instead of Hamas. How does Hamas treat Arab Palestinian Christians in Gaza? Are Hamas terrorists starving as well? How is Hamas keeping the hostages? Does Hamas allow Arab Palestinians in the thousands of miles of tunnels for protection or are the tunnels only for terrorist activities? Not a single Arab Palestinian condemns Hamas attacks on October 7 which brought this judgment. Arab Palestinians fear their Hamas "government" more than they fear Israel. Yousef is failing "his duty" by not holding Hamas accountable.
