First Orbit

First OrbitApril 12th 1961 – Yuri Gagarin is about to see what no other person has seen in the history of humanity – the Earth from space.

In the next 108 minutes he'll see more than most people do in a lifetime. What sights awaited the first cosmonaut silently gliding over the world below? What was it like to view the oceans and continents sailing by from such a height?

In a unique collaboration with the European Space Agency, and the Expedition 26/27 crew of the International Space Station, this film shows what Gagarin first witnessed fifty years ago.

By matching the orbital path of the Space Station, as closely as possible, to that of Gagarin's Vostok 1 spaceship and filming the same vistas of the Earth through the new giant cupola window, astronaut Paolo Nespoli, and documentary film maker Christopher Riley, have captured a new digital high definition view of the Earth below, half a century after Gagarin first witnessed it.

Weaving these new views together with historic, recordings of Gagarin from the time, (subtitled in Englsih) and an original score by composer Philip Sheppard, this is a spellbinding film to share with people around the world on this historic anniversary.

waaauw this s*** is amazing man !!!!!

  4. Gary V

It must have been truly amazing to be the first Human being to experience that, although a bit frightening when he lost radio contact. It's amazing just how far we have progressed since then, but imagine how far we could progress if Humanity worked together & we all pooled our resources together. Maybe one day we will all realise that there is only one race, the Human Race & progress for the benefit of all of Humanity.

    Instructive and calming.

There's no way anyone watched that from beginning to end. Painfully slow.

With whole swaths of the globe in faith's firm grip there's no snowball's chance in hell of Humanity 'working together'.

So, how to rid ourselves of faith, forever, is the question dropped upon our plate, like it or not.

How can the world ever hope to rid itself of faith without morphing into something even worse?

Nope! Faith is here to stay, and that's that! Visions of 'Species United' are all doomed to remain the butt of tasteless, cynical jokes. Faith is more intractable even than war, because faith is non-negotiable.

    @ 0zyxcga1

I can see that I obviously have more faith in Humanity than you do. To answer your first question "How do we rid ourselves of faith ? " the answer is simple, through better education. It is a fact that the more educated a person is then the less religious they become, when they are no longer misguided by outdated myths, they tend to see the world more rationally.
To answer your second question, this is also simple to answer, by replacing it with Secular Humanism. Which is on the increase, while religion is on the decline. We do not need ancient books about outdated myths to teach us morals ( at least I don't ) because anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows what is right & wrong.
I disagree that faith is non-negotiable, not if you are rational & question everything, only if you are a sheep who blindly believes whatever you are told. As the world is getting more educated it is religion that is becoming the butt of cynical jokes & quite rightly too.

    @ Gary V

"I can see that I obviously have more faith in Humanity than you do." -- Infinitely more. I am faith free.

"To answer your first question '"How do we rid ourselves of faith ? ' the answer is simple, through better education."

I agree, of course. Now, go, become an 'educator' in Iran!

"It is a fact that the more educated a person is then the less religious they become, when they are no longer misguided by outdated myths, they tend to see the world more rationally."

A truism! The problem is HOW to implement it?

Listen! I am an American. We, here, cannot even force our own government to improve our system of public education. Denmark spends more money, per capita, on education than any other nation on the face of this planet. In the industrialized West, America comes in dead last, even behind Mexico. If we Americans cannot do it even here at home, fat chance of accomplishing it world-wide. Pessimism? - NO -- Realism - YES.

Where is this salve, this balm, of education to come from?
Seriously. From WHERE? -- Seriously. HOW?
I really do want to know. honest!

I have no faith in Humanity, because I have no faith, at all.
Give me a workable plan(I said WORKABLE) and a sufficient budget. Trash 'faith'!

"To answer your second question, this is also simple to answer, by replacing it with Secular Humanism."

Oh, we're just going to convert the world to secular humanism, just like that, are we. Gee, whiz, why didn't we think of that before? And just how do you propose going about this? Perhaps we should start in Palestine!(lol) Do not forget YOUR subject was ALL of Humanity -- ALL!

    Fat chance!

Or should I perhaps NOT give up on faith and go to church and pray for this to happen. Maybe YOU have a plan(a workable plan!) to do. Do you? I'm all ears!

"Which is on the increase, while religion is on the decline"

Well, here, in San Francisco, I can't remember a time when Secular Humanism didn't dominate(strike that!)... I can't remember a time when Secular Humanism didn't enjoy an absolute monopoly! Now, let's see, that's aprox 6,000,000,000 minus seven hundred thousand. Well, I guess it's a start(lol).

"We do not need ancient books about outdated myths to teach us morals (at least I don't) because anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows what is right & wrong"

No kidding! Now why hasn't everybody come to their senses and seen this obvious truth?

Maybe we should help the sheep along, starting with, say, oh... what the hell! Pakistan!(or maybe the Philippines?). Or, maybe we should set our sights even higher and start here at home(that'd be a REAL challenge!). We will just wave our magic wand and all the Creationists will be attending Biology 101.

"I disagree that faith is non-negotiable"

Do you, now? For goodness sake, whatever is your idea of faith?

"if you are rational & question everything"
then you won't be processed of faith in the first place!

"if you are a sheep who blindly believes whatever you are told" then you will be subject to faith, and then no one will be able to reason with you.

Why do you persist in circular thinking? Think! If you are not a sheep, then, guess what! You won't be a sheep! Wow, what an insight! Now, why didn't I think of that?

    Back to reality.

Why don't YOU try to turn one sheep(just one!) into a thinking person, TODAY-- Good luck!

"As the world is getting more educated it is religion that is becoming the butt of cynical jokes & quite rightly too"

And you think the world is getting more educated? You really think religion that is becoming the butt of cynical jokes("& quite rightly too")! Maybe at the cocktail parties you attend.

Google: World Population - Live Update

I spent about an hour putting this together, during that time aprox. 8,567 MORE people on this planet(added to the six billion already here) have just now been born into abject poverty. Go! Go forth and talketh to them about Secular Humanism! Get the Pope to take back his words when he said to Sub-Saharan Africans that condoms help spread AIDS. Go on, put you money where you mouth is! Go on, just DO IT!. Then come and tell me there's hope!

    RLMFA

We'll be living in a world of a interdependent, unified, harmonious Humanity... and meanwhile?

  12. Gary V

    @ 0zyxcba1

Very good my friend. You spent an hour of your time to reply to my comment. Respect. Can I please ask what you suggest that we do to solve the problems of the world.
    War
    Hunger
    Over population
    Injustice & exploitation

  13. leonardobdas

WOW. what an experience. Imagine the emotion of floating that high in the air all by yourself..... now only if one coudl light one up and post the pics on facebook.... LOL..... now seriously, 50 years ago my parents hadn't experienced electricity.... and there he was in orbit. Astonishing.

  14. Noel Reissmann

People as yours truly are part of the problem, faith can be interpreted in many forms. Religion can't for that matter; It is the belief of something non existent(as far as we know through science for now). If everyone would think like you do we could just all say "Hey f*** the world, give me my due and f*** off, f*** everything. I just want to live my life in comfort
and be part of this monetary world."

You must think you are one hell of a smart guy don't you?

Well I got news for you; you are just a smart a** pessimist!

The one and only problem in this world which creates all other problems is the monetary global system that we humans created; religion is a tiny factor in the problem of humans working as one!

Know your "shizzle" before going on a typing rampage of pure nonsense!

Respects to Gary V, never give up hope and have faith that someday humanity will stand at the pressipiss and realize what must be done !

What's kinda sad to me is the spacecraft had solar panels.. IN 1961, and yet today we are still burning fuels, to create energy when NATURE provides ALL we need clean and economically.. SHAME on MANKIND

  16. Reagan De-giorgi

hey noal dunno what ur carrying on about but everyone wants soverenty not nwo jock strap, educate urself

  17. Duane Drew

thats because solar panels havnt progressed since the 60s

  18. geo moses

Noel Reissmann your right the factor of religion doesnt compare of science wonders, if we all really paid any attention to reality, you would notice theres no such thing as a god,but there is such thing as a self environmental eco system,if really something was created by a snap of a hand it would be a stars explosion,if a god create anything it would be the galaxy, anyways before this galaxy there were billions of more,if where just starting to begin the existence of humans, well get your eyes off your bible and look around you, evolution is everywhere you stand, from a natural gas cloud in space,to minerals and organisms which have a balance to the called home, which we call earth, and earth is one of many billions of similar alien planets to earth,if were such a special creation what makes the others just animals and insects, but from those animals we manage to evolve to a new generation, and a new era,if you re so sure about your something special look at the other animals like dogs and cats how they communicate in there own language, just the same way we communicate with each other,we,the same animals communicate, build in a world of lies, and not facts,we already are gunna expect for the worse, war vs the religious movement,a war of nonsense and a world with democracy and a way to live your life, doesnt everyone want to be there own self person and enjoy life the way you want to??.. thats one question i ask everyone and most people cant respond to it, dont you? think about it if you can just live life your own way without no one pushing you to anything from the start,it would make the biggest impact of the way you think, the way you see the world..... noting more to say the world is just **** up,..

  19. Asmita Thapa

ahhhh so beautiful and eye openning ! :D

  20. Wintermute

you do realize that was the ISS, the Vostok 1 didn't have solar panels

  21. Karl Dulle

Actually As a panel user I disagree totally. Efficiency in manufacturing, and performance have increased substantially..
