In this technological age, it can be difficult to maintain privacy and keep personal information out of the public eye. It is difficult to do so as a private citizen and even more difficult to do so as a public figure. This proved embarrassingly true for Anthony Weiner, a former congressman.
He ended up being a victim put on spectacle when a suggestive photo of him started to circulate on Twitter. His initial reaction was denial and sarcastic humor. This kept the situation level for a while, but it didn't last. He kept being evasive long enough for his integrity to take a hit when the truth finally came out. He had to resign.
One would think this would be the end of the saga but, it actually continued. He decided to run for mayor only 2 years later. At the start of the mayoral race, he seemed to be rising above it all. However, his race was cut short when more photos were revealed. What was supposed to be his second chance ended up being a failure because of the same issue that caused him to need a second chance in the first place.
Unlike the first incident, the women involved in the second incident were identified and they decided to capitalize on the story. This ensured that the story could not quite die down as it had before.
One of the persons who was most affected by these incidents was his wife, who had worked in the political arena for years. She had worked competently and closely with Hilary Clinton, whose presidential campaign faced enough issues as it was.
While the two cases seem unrelated, Weiner’s case ended up being a footnote that may have caused her the several few votes Hilary needed to push through on her campaign. During Hilary’s campaign, Wiener’s wife announced a divorce. Somehow that brought even more emails to the forefront of public attention. It also brought up the issue of confidentiality where sharing information with her staff would be a concern.
It's an interesting speculation into one of the could-be reasons for the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election.
