Marvin Gaye: His Final Hours

2011, Biography  -   13 Comments
Storyline

On his last day alive soul superstar Marvin Gaye is depressed and paranoid. He's abandoned his latest tour and is holed up at his parents' house in Los Angeles, California.

His excessive drug use escalates and with it, the tension in the home. Soon, his lifelong power struggle with his father explodes in a violent climax as Marvin provokes his father into shooting him twice.

We delve into the Prince of Motown's violent childhood to uncover the root of Marvin's strained relationship with his strict father and to understand his struggle with drugs.

Few deaths in the annals of American pop music stand out as more bewildering, senseless and tragic than the shooting of Marvin Gaye (a day before his 45th birthday) by his own father.

This probing look into the last days of the soul icon investigates how drugs, paranoia, depression and a lifetime of tension between father and son precipitated an event that shocked the world.

Amazing artist deserves better than this crap sensationalist documentary. its more like watching the FBI files. And surely the whole selling point of a documentary on Marvin Gaye is his music yet all we hear is this cheap elevator background music.

    Why is Marvin's "sister-in-law" white?

    1. Michael jones

      why not

    2. MarvFan

because she married his younger brother, Frank (who btw, was a singer too and died in 2001, age 60).

This is a sad and terrible story, but done here in an exploitive manner befitting a supermarket tabloid. Where was Marvin Gaye's original music? I only heard cheap incidental filler. I hope the makers of this documentary have someone counting down their career; 2:31:23 'til the last frame you will every shoot!

There was no mention of Tammi Terrel; but when she died, Marvin didn't want to perform anymore. It took awhile for him to get over her death and start performing again. There is a video on youtube of him telling Don Cornelius this on Soul Train. Wonder if that had anything to do with his addiction, and the transformation attempt to his second wife.

From what I read, Tammi's illness and death definitely triggered a downfall for Marvin.
